The various ranks of the shinobis. They go in order from highest to lowest.
Kage:
(Ka-gay)
There are five Kages in Naruto though there are more then nine villages in the series. The five include Leaf,Sand,Lightning,Water and Earth.
The Kage is usually the strongest ninja in his/her village and is chosen by the villagers to rule and command the ninjas of that village. They manage money,events,political things, and are public icons. They also decide what ninja or team will get what mission and rank. A rank missions are ones they preform.
Hokage (Fire Shadow)-Leaf Village
Mizukage (Water Shadow)-Water Village(aka Mist)
Kazekage (Wind Shadow)-Sand Village
Tsuchikage (Stone Shadow)-Earth Village(or Stone)

Jounin:

Jounin is the highest rank a shinobi can gain. These shinobi are incredibly skilled and have worked had to obtain their ranks. The only rank higher then them is the Kage.
These ninja preform A,B, and sometimes C rank missions. They will also be known to preform assassinations and any other highly challenging mission. Jounin are assigned to three genin to train with a certain period of time. Their goal is to train them in further and more difficult techniques not taught at the academy. The end result is to have a strong team or worthy ninjas that will be able to participate in the Chunnin exams and further up the ranks.
(Jounin wear includes the green vest for the Leaf village at least. Not all Jounin wear it however.)
Jounins and ANBU are only to be played by people who know Naruto! The lower ranks are better for people to the series so you'll learn it better. Be can't have newbie jounins teaching genins. NO ONE CAN BE A JOUNIN WITHOUT STAFF PERMISSION.

Akina's personal favorite of the ninja ranks. ANBU are a special division of the Jounin rank such as the Chuunin examiners and the leaders of certain teams(interogation, information gathering, etc.)
These ninja must be incredibly skilled as they serve as the protectors and stealthy guards of the Kages. They work in large or small groups and can also preform A rank missions, assasinations, escorts, and other bodyguards.
They wear less protective gear then Jounin, a white vest and are typically found with a sword on their back. Every ANBU member has a tattoo on either their right or left shoulder to symbolize their rank. ANBU members's identities are kept secret from anyone except the Kages,Jounin and other ANBU. They wear a variety of animal masks with red or blue markings painted. It also helps them identify who is who.
Hunter-Nin:[/b][/u]
A sub group of Jounins like the ANBU. These ninja can be considered ANBU since they wear the same masks. Their duty is to hunt down missing or criminal ninjas who have abandoned the village. It is all to keep the secrets and techniques of village hidden. Hunter-nins are ruthless ninja and will not return unless they have found and killed their quarry.

Chuunin:[/b][/u]

Chuunin are considered the medium rank in the shinobi. They are a rank higher then the genin and one below the Jounin. This rank is only attainable if a genin manages to pass the Chuunin exam(Only 2 usually pass the exam) In this rank, ninjas are no longer followers to a Jounin. Instead, they are allowed to lead groups of lower ranked ninjas and participate in more challenging missions such as C and B ranked mission. Chuunin are also allowed to teach classes at the academy.

15-17 years old

Genin:[/u]

(The three main genins of the show)
Congrats to the academy students. Genins are students who have passed their graduation test at the academy. At this rank, you are considered a ninja, a beginner ninja of course. Genins have shown the ability to master the basic techniques such as Bunshin no Jutsu(art of replication) and Kawarimi no jutsu (body substitue skill)
Once they pass a the test, they are paired up with a Jounin teacher to teach them further in more difficult techniques as well as simple D and sometimes C ranked missions. All teams consist of three genins picked by the teachers. It's common to find a low graded student with a higher grade student so that the one can benefit. You can't complain against who is in your team so get used to it.
A main goal with Genin is to able to work together. A team that fights will never get anywhere and will have a low if not impossible chance of passing the Chuunin exam. So work together out there, it really does count.
Age Range:
11-15 years old depending on when they graduated

Academy Student:[/b][/u]

The lowest rank of the shinobi. Technically, you aren't even an official one untill you pass your graduation test and become a genin. There are no missions involved in this rank but instead the constant study and teachings of the basic ninja arts. Such include throwing shurikens, simple jutsus, learning the ranks, etc. They are usually taught by an experienced Chuunin.
Most students start at a very young age and attend untill they pass the test. Only with good grades will you exceed to the Genin rank and become a ninja. It's a tough cut and hard to move up. Good luck to our students!

Missing Nin:[/u]

Missing Ninjas or Nins are criminals in their home village or ones who have abandoned it. Because of this, they are hunted relentsly by the villages Hunter-nins untill they are killed. Criminal ninjas carry their villages secret techniques and information and to prevent the spread of those things, they are tracked down. Missing nins are never allowed to return to their village less they be killed on sight.

Any depending on what rank they were when they became missing nins
