Familiars Website
Please don't go insane and have everyone have a familiar. Pets are fine but these guys actually have to have a good defined purpose. Any familiar must be approved by a staff member.
In the series, there are several shinobi who have familiars. These familiars are animals who help them in battle and serve as partners rather then pets. Pets are only meant to be companions and have no part in a shinobi's job. Do not get these two confused.
Examples of this would be with Kiba and his dog Akamaru who helps him fight. The same goes with Shino and his insects. Not all familiars will actually have to fight. They can serve as distractions to allow their masters to attack their enemy or confuse them.

Not All of them Speak!
Pets in Naruto have no means of communication with their master beside the whole basic meowing and barking. Familiars on the other hand can sometimes speak (mentally or aloud) to their owners. Yes this is true because in the series, Kuromaru of Kiba's clan can actually speak to his master. Having them talk aloud is rare however so most talk in mind.
Some familiars do not even speak at all but their owners know them so well that a simple chain of barks or such can be a whole sentence to them. And no familiar talks to another person mentally.
